着

着 — ongoing state

Pattern

+
( ) can be left out · other words may come before, between and after

How it works

着 after a verb shows that a state stays on — a door standing open, a person holding something. It describes a lasting condition rather than a one-time action.

Examples

门开着。
Mén kāi zhe.
The door is open.
他手里拿着一本书。
Tā shǒu lǐ ná zhe yì běn shū.
He is holding a book in his hand.
