HSK 7–9 grammar · conjunction

⋯⋯,以至于⋯⋯

⋯⋯,以至于⋯⋯ — to the point that

Pattern

+
( ) can be left out · other words may come before, between and after

How it works

以至于 reports how far a state went: "so much so that…". Unlike 以致, it passes no judgement — the result may be good, bad or merely striking, and the point is the extreme degree.

Examples

他看得太入迷,以至于忘了时间。
Tā kàn de tài rùmí, yǐzhìyú wàng le shíjiān.
He was so absorbed in reading that he lost track of time.
变化之大,以至于我几乎认不出这条街。
Biànhuà zhī dà, yǐzhìyú wǒ jīhū rèn bu chū zhè tiáo jiē.
It had changed so much that I could hardly recognise the street.
