HSK 7–9 grammar · particle

矣

矣 — classical final particle

Pattern

+
( ) can be left out · other words may come before, between and after

How it works

矣 ends a sentence in classical Chinese much as 了 does today, marking that a situation has come about. Modern learners meet it only in quotations, proverbs and deliberately archaic style — recognise it rather than produce it.

Examples

由来久矣。
Yóulái jiǔ yǐ.
It has been so for a long time.
大势去矣。
Dàshì qù yǐ.
The tide has turned against us.
