HSK 2 grammar · preposition

为

为 — for / for the sake of

Pattern

+ + +
( ) can be left out · other words may come before, between and after

How it works

为 before a noun or person marks who or what an action is done for — "for", "for the sake of". For a purpose ("in order to") the fuller form 为了 is used.

Examples

我为你高兴。
Wǒ wèi nǐ gāoxìng.
I'm happy for you.
他为大家做饭。
Tā wèi dàjiā zuò fàn.
He cooks for everyone.
谢谢你为我做的一切。
Xièxie nǐ wèi wǒ zuò de yíqiè.
Thank you for everything you did for me.
