How it works
请 at the start of a request means "please" and makes it polite. It literally invites the other person to do the action.
Examples
请坐。
Qǐng zuò.
Please sit down.
请给我一杯水。
Qǐng gěi wǒ yì bēi shuǐ.
Please give me a glass of water.
