HSK 7–9 grammar · adverb

偏偏

偏偏 — of all things; deliberately

Pattern

+
( ) can be left out · other words may come before, between and after

How it works

偏偏 marks a perverse coincidence — the one thing you did not want, happening at the worst moment — or a wilful refusal to do as asked. Both readings carry the speaker's irritation.

Examples

要出门,偏偏下起雨来。
Yào chūmén, piānpiān xià qǐ yǔ lái.
Just as we were going out, it had to start raining.
我让他别去,他偏偏要去。
Wǒ ràng tā bié qù, tā piānpiān yào qù.
I told him not to go, but he insisted on going anyway.
