莫非 — could it be that …?

How it works
莫非 voices a guess the speaker has just arrived at and half believes: "don't tell me…, could it be that…". Like 难道 it is rhetorical, but 莫非 guesses where 难道 challenges.
Examples
他还没来，莫非忘了？
Tā hái méi lái, mòfēi wàng le?
He's still not here — could he have forgotten?
莫非你早就知道了？
Mòfēi nǐ zǎojiù zhīdào le?
Don't tell me you knew all along?
