How it works
据 before a source marks where information comes from — "according to", "based on". It opens the sentence in a reporting, written style, as in 据说 (it is said), 据报道 (it is reported).
Examples
据天气预报，明天有大雨。
Jù tiānqì yùbào, míngtiān yǒu dàyǔ.
According to the forecast, there will be heavy rain tomorrow.
据我所知，他已经离开了。
Jù wǒ suǒ zhī, tā yǐjīng líkāi le.
As far as I know, he has already left.
据统计，该市人口超过千万。
Jù tǒngjì, gāi shì rénkǒu chāoguò qiān wàn.
According to statistics, the city's population exceeds ten million.
