HSK 7–9 grammar · adverb

好在

好在 — fortunately, the good thing is

Pattern

+
( ) can be left out · other words may come before, between and after

How it works

好在 names the saving grace in an otherwise bad situation: "luckily, at least…". It differs from 幸亏 in pointing at a favourable *condition* rather than at the lucky cause that averted trouble.

Examples

车坏了,好在离家不远。
Chē huài le, hǎozài lí jiā bù yuǎn.
The car broke down — luckily we weren't far from home.
考得不好,好在还有机会。
Kǎo de bù hǎo, hǎozài hái yǒu jīhuì.
I did badly on the exam, but at least there's another chance.
