地

地 — adverbial marker

Pattern

+ +
( ) can be left out · other words may come before, between and after

How it works

地 (pronounced de) turns a description into a manner adverb that tells how an action is done. It sits between the modifier and the verb. Don't confuse it with 得, which links a verb to a following degree/result complement.

Examples

他高兴地笑了。
Tā gāoxìng de xiào le.
He smiled happily.
请慢慢地说。
Qǐng mànmàn de shuō.
Please speak slowly.
