How it works
除此之外 opens a sentence to add a further item beyond what was just said: "apart from this, …". 此 refers back to the previous sentence, so it cannot start a paragraph with nothing before it.
Examples
他会英语和法语，除此之外还懂一点儿日语。
Tā huì Yīngyǔ hé Fǎyǔ, chúcǐzhīwài hái dǒng yìdiǎnr Rìyǔ.
He speaks English and French; besides that he knows a little Japanese.
除此之外，我没有别的要求。
Chúcǐzhīwài, wǒ méiyǒu bié de yāoqiú.
Apart from this, I have no other requests.
