With tone marks
How to type it
- Put the tone number right after the syllable:
ma1 ma2 ma3 ma4→ mā má mǎ mà. - Write
5(or nothing) for the neutral tone:xie4xie5→ xièxie. - Type ü as
voru::lv4andlu:4both give lǜ. - Syllables can run together (zhong1guo2 → zhōngguó) and capitals are kept. Anything that is not pinyin, like mp3, is left as it is.
Where the tone mark goes
The mark sits on one vowel of the syllable, by three rules:
- If there is an a or an e, it takes the mark: hǎo, bèi, guāng.
- In ou, the o takes it: dōu, zǒu.
- Otherwise the last vowel takes it: guó, liù, duì.
The marks show the four tones: ā is high and level, á rises, ǎ dips, à falls. Hear them in the tone trainer.
