How it works
于是 links two clauses where the second follows naturally from the first — "so", "thereupon", "and then". It marks a result or the next step in a sequence of events, common in narration.
Examples
天下起了大雨，于是我们回家了。
Tiān xià qǐ le dàyǔ, yúshì wǒmen huí jiā le.
It started pouring, so we went home.
他没听懂，于是又问了一遍。
Tā méi tīngdǒng, yúshì yòu wèn le yí biàn.
He didn't understand, so he asked again.
大家都同意，于是就这么决定了。
Dàjiā dōu tóngyì, yúshì jiù zhème juédìng le.
Everyone agreed, so it was decided.
