How it works
于 is a written-style preposition marking time, place, source, or a standard of comparison, usually right after the verb or adjective — 生于 (born in), 位于 (located at), 高于 (higher than). It is characteristic of formal Chinese.
Examples
他生于一九九〇年。
Tā shēng yú yījiǔjiǔlíng nián.
He was born in 1990.
学校位于市中心。
Xuéxiào wèiyú shì zhōngxīn.
The school is located in the city center.
今年的产量高于去年。
Jīnnián de chǎnliàng gāo yú qùnián.
This year's output is higher than last year's.
