How it works
由 … 组成 (or 构成) says what parts make up a whole — "be made up of", "consist of". 由 introduces the components and 组成 closes the frame; the whole is the subject.
Examples
水由氢和氧组成。
Shuǐ yóu qīng hé yǎng zǔchéng.
Water is composed of hydrogen and oxygen.
这个小组由五个人组成。
Zhège xiǎozǔ yóu wǔ ge rén zǔchéng.
This group is made up of five people.
一年由十二个月组成。
Yì nián yóu shí'èr ge yuè zǔchéng.
A year consists of twelve months.
