X了又Y,Y了又X

X了又Y,Y了又X — over and over

Pattern

+ + + + + +
( ) can be left out · other words may come before, between and after

How it works

Two verbs chase each other through the frame to picture an action cycling without end: 写了又改,改了又写. The repetition itself carries the meaning — the speaker is stressing weary persistence or futility.

Examples

他写了又改,改了又写。
Tā xiě le yòu gǎi, gǎi le yòu xiě.
He wrote and revised, revised and wrote again.
雪化了又下,下了又化。
Xuě huà le yòu xià, xià le yòu huà.
The snow melted and fell, fell and melted again.
