所谓⋯⋯就是⋯⋯

所谓⋯⋯就是⋯⋯ — what is called X is Y

Pattern

+ +
( ) can be left out · other words may come before, between and after

How it works

所谓…就是… defines a term for the reader: "what we call X is Y". Note that 所谓 alone, before a noun, often carries scare quotes — the speaker doubts the label — but inside this frame it is neutral.

Examples

所谓幸福,就是知足。
Suǒwèi xìngfú, jiùshì zhīzú.
What we call happiness is simply contentment.
所谓共享经济,就是把闲置资源利用起来。
Suǒwèi gòngxiǎng jīngjì, jiùshì bǎ xiánzhì zīyuán lìyòng qǐlái.
The so-called sharing economy means putting idle resources to use.
