所

所 — structural 所 (所 + verb; 为…所…)

Pattern

+ + +
+ + +
a passive
( ) can be left out · other words may come before, between and after

How it works

The structural particle 所 goes before a transitive verb to form a noun-like phrase — 所说的话 (what is said), 我所知道的 (what I know). In formal writing it also appears in the 为…所… passive.

Examples

这正是我所需要的。
Zhè zhèng shì wǒ suǒ xūyào de.
This is exactly what I need.
他所做的一切都是为了家人。
Tā suǒ zuò de yíqiè dōu shì wèile jiārén.
Everything he does is for his family.
他为人们所熟知。
Tā wéi rénmen suǒ shúzhī.
He is well known to people.
