是 — to be (A 是 B)

How it works
是 links two nouns and means "A is B". It joins a subject to a noun, not to an adjective — for adjectives use 很 instead.
Examples
我是学生。
Wǒ shì xuésheng.
I am a student.
他是我的老师。
Tā shì wǒ de lǎoshī.
He is my teacher.
