让/叫

让/叫 — causative (make/let someone do)

Pattern

+ + +
( ) can be left out · other words may come before, between and after

How it works

让 or 叫 sets up a causative: someone gets another person to do something — "make/let/have someone do." The person follows 让/叫 and then does the second verb. 让 leans toward "let/allow," while 叫 leans toward "tell/order."

Examples

妈妈让我早点回家。
Māma ràng wǒ zǎo diǎn huí jiā.
Mom told me to come home earlier.
老师叫他站起来回答问题。
Lǎoshī jiào tā zhàn qǐlái huídá wèntí.
The teacher had him stand up and answer the question.
