How it works
即 has two written uses: "that is, namely" equating two expressions (北京即中国的首都), and "immediately" before a verb (即将、即刻). Both belong to formal registers.
Examples
本次会议即日生效。
Běn cì huìyì jírì shēngxiào.
This resolution takes effect this very day.
知识即力量。
Zhīshi jí lìliàng.
