How it works
反倒 reports an outcome opposite to what the situation led you to expect. It is the spoken twin of 反而; both need the expectation to be recoverable from what came before.
Examples
吃了药反倒更难受了。
Chī le yào fǎndào gèng nánshòu le.
After taking the medicine he felt worse instead.
我帮了他，他反倒怪我。
Wǒ bāng le tā, tā fǎndào guài wǒ.
I helped him, and he blamed me instead.
