How it works
除 is the written short form of 除了 — "except", "besides". It pairs with 外/以外 to mark exclusion or addition in a formal tone.
Examples
除周日外，我每天都上班。
Chú zhōurì wài, wǒ měitiān dōu shàngbān.
Except Sunday, I work every day.
除他以外，没有人知道真相。
Chú tā yǐwài, méiyǒu rén zhīdào zhēnxiàng.
Apart from him, no one knows the truth.
除此以外，我没有别的要求。
Chú cǐ yǐwài, wǒ méiyǒu bié de yāoqiú.
Other than this, I have no other requests.
