HSK 7–9 grammar · preposition

趁

趁 — while (taking the chance)

Pattern

+
+
( ) can be left out · other words may come before, between and after

How it works

趁 marks a window of opportunity the speaker means to use before it closes: "while it's still…". It differs from a plain time phrase in implying the chance is limited and should be seized.

Examples

趁热吃吧。
Chèn rè chī ba.
Eat it while it's hot.
趁着年轻,多出去走走。
Chènzhe niánqīng, duō chūqù zǒuzou.
While you're young, get out and see the world.
