不敢当 — you flatter me

Pattern

( ) can be left out · other words may come before, between and after

How it works

不敢当 is a set modest reply used when someone praises or thanks you or treats you with special courtesy: "you flatter me / I don't deserve it / you're too kind." It politely declines the honor.

Examples

“您是这方面的专家。”“不敢当,我只是比较感兴趣。”
“Nín shì zhè fāngmiàn de zhuānjiā.” “Bùgǎndāng, wǒ zhǐshì bǐjiào gǎn xìngqù.”
“You're an expert in this.” “You flatter me — I'm just quite interested in it.”
大家这么客气,真是不敢当。
Dàjiā zhème kèqi, zhēnshi bùgǎndāng.
You're all so kind — I really don't deserve it.
