被…给…

被…给… — passive with emphatic 给

Pattern

+ + + + +
( ) can be left out · other words may come before, between and after

How it works

In the passive, an extra 给 can appear right before the verb to add emphasis, common in speech — 被人给偷了, 让雨给淋湿了. The 给 is optional and does not change the basic meaning.

Examples

我的自行车被人给偷了。
Wǒ de zìxíngchē bèi rén gěi tōu le.
My bike got stolen (by someone).
蛋糕让弟弟给吃光了。
Dàngāo ràng dìdi gěi chī guāng le.
The cake was all eaten up by my little brother.
衣服叫雨给淋湿了。
Yīfu jiào yǔ gěi lín shī le.
The clothes got soaked by the rain.
