啊

啊 — sentence-final exclamation / softener

Pattern

+
+
( ) can be left out · other words may come before, between and after

How it works

啊 at the end of a sentence adds feeling — surprise, warmth, or emphasis in an exclamation, or a softer tone in a question or reminder. Its sound often shifts with the preceding syllable (呀/哪) in speech.

Examples

这里真美啊!
Zhèlǐ zhēn měi a!
It's so beautiful here!
你说什么啊?
Nǐ shuō shénme a?
What are you saying?
快点儿啊!
Kuài diǎnr a!
Hurry up!
