HSK 4 grammar · adverb

未必

未必 — not necessarily

Pattern

+ +
( ) can be left out · other words may come before, between and after

How it works

未必 before a verb or adjective denies that something is sure to be true — "not necessarily", "may not". It is a softer, more written way of saying 不一定.

Examples

贵的东西未必好。
Guì de dōngxi wèibì hǎo.
Expensive things aren't necessarily good.
他答应了,未必会真的来。
Tā dāying le, wèibì huì zhēn de lái.
He agreed, but may not really come.
这个办法未必行得通。
Zhège bànfǎ wèibì xíng de tōng.
This method won't necessarily work.
