How it works
Chinese asks content questions by putting the question word (什么 what, 谁 who, 哪儿 where, 几/多少 how many) in the same slot the answer would take, keeping normal word order.

你叫什么名字？
Nǐ jiào shénme míngzi?
What's your name?
他是谁？
Tā shì shéi?
