How it works
A number cannot attach straight to a noun; a measure word goes between them. 个 is the general one, but many nouns take their own (本 for books, 只 for animals).
Examples
我有一个问题。
Wǒ yǒu yí ge wèntí.
I have a question.
我买了三本书。
Wǒ mǎi le sān běn shū.
I bought three books.
