从

从 — from (a starting point)

Pattern

+ +
+ + +
( ) can be left out · other words may come before, between and after

How it works

从 before a place or time word marks the starting point that an action moves from, like "from". Put 从 and its source in front of the verb. This is the bare source use — for a full span use the paired 从…到.

Examples

我从北京来。
Wǒ cóng Běijīng lái.
I come from Beijing.
你从哪儿来?
Nǐ cóng nǎr lái?
Where do you come from?
从这儿走。
Cóng zhèr zǒu.
Leave from here.
