HSK 4 grammar · adverb

差点儿

差点儿 — almost (nearly happened)

Pattern

+
+
( ) can be left out · other words may come before, between and after

How it works

Means a feared or unwanted event nearly occurred but did not. For undesired outcomes, 差点儿 and 差点儿没 mean the same thing (both: it almost happened but didn't). For a hoped-for outcome, 差点儿 means it nearly failed to happen, while 差点儿没 means it barely did happen.

Examples

我差点儿迟到了。
Wǒ chàdiǎnr chídào le.
I almost arrived late.
他差点儿没赶上火车。
Tā chàdiǎnr méi gǎnshàng huǒchē.
He barely caught the train.
